This week was relatively calm for the high-end Pentium 4 processors. The new 1.7GHz chip fell a mere $25 this week, putting the flagship P4 at $359. The "lesser" P4's saw similarly low price drops this week: the 1.5GHz part fell $11, the 1.4GHz $13, and the 1.3GHz $10. The 1.4GHz part is the best deal right now, as it sits just under the $200 price mark. We should note that investing in a new Pentium 4 not only involves buying a processor, but also an expensive i850 motherboard and RDRAM. For more pricing information on these items, check out our Weekly Memory & Motherboard Price Guide.

The Pentium III front also saw minimal price fluctuations this week. The 1.0GHz part fell $5 this week, putting it at $205. Those looking to build a high performing system on a budget should look into the 750MHz and 733MHz parts which can each be purchased for $103.

The Celeron line of processors saw some significant price reductions this week. The 800MHz part fell $10 putting it at $79. We recommend this model because its 100MHz (FSB) alleviates some of the bandwidth limitations seen on older 66MHz FSB Celerons.
