Is it dual voltage? Since its region free I can pick one up on the economy and use a VAT form to knock the price down a bit!
  • ajp_anton - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

You mean the AC adapter? Those have worked globally since generations ago, even though they don't explicitly advertize it on the adapter itself. I've tested them while travelling.
  • Manch - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Ah fair enough. I miss that part when reading thru. Didn't know the past ones were dual voltage. Ive always went and bought a dual voltage adapter. Now ill have to go test my "110" ones. Sweet, I may go buy this on the economy then. If its priced 299Euro then Im gtg. I can pick it up for 250Euro w/ a VAT form
  • DanNeely - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Read the label on the adapter instead of testing by plugging into the wall and hoping nothing blows up. Most modern power bricks are ~100-240V 47-63Hz in designs; but there are still occasional exceptions that only do one voltage/frequency level or need to flip a physical switch to change between them. And while most of the exceptions involve things with electric motors in them electronics occasionally still do offend that way.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

It's $299 USD, it won't be 299 euros. Probably more like $349 or even $379.
  • Manch - Sunday, January 15, 2017 - link

Saturn.de has it on their website for 329Euro. So knock off VAT and that takes it to 276Euro which is about $290. Saves $10 LOL.
  • baka_toroi - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The O3DS power adapter most certainly was 110V only, both in the US and in Japan.

The N3DS comes without an adaptor. The traditional Wii was only 110V. So I don't really know what you mean by "generations."
  • ajp_anton - Friday, January 20, 2017 - link

My adapters for Gamecube, Wii, GBA-SP and DS Lite have all worked in 110V despite being "European" and only say "220V" (or was it 230 or 240?) on the label.
  • Guspaz - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

It's standard USB-C, so even in the unlikely scenario that their power brick isn't 110-240v, you should be able to simply use any USB-C charger that is sufficiently powerful.
  • Manch - Sunday, January 15, 2017 - link

Ah OK, sweet. Yeah, my 3DS was def only a 110 AC/DC adapter. I travel constantly and never know if the country Im assigned to next is going to be 110 or 220 LOL. I always try to get everything dual voltage or get adapters bc step down/up transformers suck down power. So far my stations have been 110, 220, 100, 220, 110, 220, 220. Pretty sure the next and last one will be good ole USA.

Is Nintendo a toy maker now?
Seems fine for children but nobody else.
  • silverblue - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

I'm sure people thought that when the Wii/Revolution was announced. The games prices are anything but child-friendly, however.

This is the third generation of consoles - handhelds aside - that Nintendo has sought to sell by virtue of being different to the other machines on offer. Surely they can't do any worse than with the Wii U?
  • xype - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Are you serious? I mean, is that really a question you’re honestly asking?

You’re asking if the company whose main franchise is Mario, who put out products like the Game Boy Color or the GameCube and who is known to be "family friendly" is a "toy maker now"?

Are you next going to ask whether Apple is "in the game only to make money" or something like that?
  • Meteor2 - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Indeed. Nintendo is a toy company. It always has been.
  • will54 - Monday, January 16, 2017 - link

Pretty sure nintendo started out as a toy maker,You know before the famicon.
  • xype - Tuesday, January 17, 2017 - link

    Yup, toymaker, playing cards, etc.
  • psychobriggsy - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The problem with aiming at children is that you can buy a Fire Kids Tablet for a fraction of the price.

Sure, it doesn't have Joycons and Amiibo reading or IR sensor, and the GPU is slower, but until they're older it will suffice. (Children's) Games are free too (for the first year).

So we're looking at older children, as a family friendly console instead of a PS4 with GTAV. :p
And people that like Nintendo IP that didn't get a Wii U.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Skyrim Special Edition is rumored to be one of their release titles. I'm not sure if that would alter your perspective, but that's not the sort of game I'd simply pass to a preteen child to play. That aside, Nintendo has a long history of appealing to younger audiences and, as we all know, their parents will buy them multiple devices to keep them entertained so an Android tablet doesn't also rule out a console (or two). After all, parents are just as bad with their own adult toys when they spend everything they can afford on whatever strikes their fancy to keep themselves from getting bored.
  • jjs2016x4x1 - Sunday, January 15, 2017 - link

Hey bro sorry to burst your bubble BUT THE SKYRIM IS THE OLDER XBOX 360 & PS3 edition and will also be slightly downscaled even from that last gen port as the switch simply doesn't have anywhere near enough power to run the remastered version and it's been confirmed it's the regular old skyrim NO REMASTERED PERIOD........ you gotta accept the fact the switch will never get full MAJOR CURRENT GEN AAA GAME PORTS AS ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN AS DEVELOPERS DONT HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO GET ANYWHERE NEAR XBOX ONE OR PS4 level graphics and or performance AND THATS THE MAIN REASON NINTENDO DIDNT SHARE ANY POWER & performance numbers or specs because their console is woefully underpowered and is essentially A MOBILE HYBRID WII U and that's it dude sorry buddy........

When has Nintendo NOT been a toy maker? Do your homework.
  • JeffFlanagan - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Nintendo has always been targeted to children and nostalgic adults. There's nothing wrong with that.

I prefer PC/XBox One/PS4 because I'm older and playing with adult friends online. For young people the Nintendo is better because they can play split-screen with their friends, and they don't each need to own a console.
  • michael2k - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

They've been a toy maker for a hundred years. Remember when they made playing cards?

Oh, no, you didn't know that. Hmm, maybe Pokemon? Or Mario Brothers? Yeah, you know, games? When games were considered toys?
  • barleyguy - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Not to mention that some of their most profitable products are Amiibo, which are literally toys.

  • barleyguy - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

    Nintendo never subsidizes hardware.
  • asdacap - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

6.2" is kinda small. I mean, its smaller than a nexus 7. More of a phablet rather than a tablet.

  • Einy0 - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Hmmm... Nintendo is launching this as a converged portable / living room experience. Does it replace 3DS and Wii U or just 3DS??? I guess it doesn't matter the Wii U is a bust. It's not really innovative, a docking tablet is nothing new. If they got it right though, it could be amazing and change how people game.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

This device is a consolidation of their efforts, my understanding is that this is the sole device that will be seeing development going forward.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

As the fanski said, this is a replacement for both their portable and console...

I wonder if that's the best course of action. Assuming a family would purchase one of them, when the Switch is plucked from its dock and carried off by a member of the house, it becomes unavailable to anyone else for usage. Does Nintendo hope to then sell multiple Switch consoles to the same house and intends they're more personal devices like a DS or is it a multi-person device? Maybe the distinction doesn't matter, but then again, consumer electronics gadgets have failed for a variety of seemingly trivial reasons in the past including consumer confusion like that.
  • willis936 - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

It replaces neither. The 3DS is the better portable and the Wii U is the better console. I can't see myself wanting to get one of these things. They just need to turn down the graphics settings. Did you see those frame drops? This is promotional material and it looked like garbage. Just give me 30 fps. Not a lot to ask for.
  • BrokenCrayons - Tuesday, January 17, 2017 - link

Whether or not you purchase one to replace your own toys has nothing to do with the company's intent to replace existing devices with a new piece of hardware.
  • Guspaz - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

They're hedging their bets in the same fashion as they did when the DS launched. You'll recall that when the DS launched, they claimed that it was a third pillar that did not replace the GBA. This was in case the DS flopped (it was a pretty radical departure at the time and nobody knew if it would succeed). If the DS had flopped, they would have discontinued it and re-focused on the GBA. They even prepared some new GBA hardware revisions to cover this scenario, the backlit SP and the Micro, both of which came out after the DS. As it happened, the DS was a big hit, so they were able to quietly discontinue the GBA.

They're doing the same thing here: the Switch won't replace the 3DS, unless it's successful, in which case it will.
  • will54 - Monday, January 16, 2017 - link

Pretty sure they already announced that they have shipped there last Wii U. So I'm going to assume it's a replacement for both.
  • Shadowmaster625 - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

    $25 Dock
    $25 controller
    $25 controller
    $25 battery
    $60 screen
    $30 Maxwell SoC
    $30 motherboard/RAM
    $10 cables and adapters
    $30 misc parts

    $50 profit?
  • vladx - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

    You forgot the 32GB eMMC.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

It surely isn't $25 per half-controller. The actual cost to them is likely in the $2-3 range for each half, max.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

And $60 for a 6.2" 720P screen? Uh no, 7 inch tablets that sell for $80 have that resolution, so probably closer to $15 for it. Nintendo is most definitely not subsidizing this device, they are hoping to make a tidy profit from each unit sold.
  • Guspaz - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Those $80 tablets don't have IPS screens. They don't even have good TN screens. Looking at the prices of 6-7" 720p+ touchscreen LCD panels on Alibaba, you're right that it wouldn't quite be $60. But likely quite a bit more than $15.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

You are incorrect, I bought my kids 7" Galaxy Tab A's for $80 a piece at MicroCenter (not on sale) which have IPS screens.
  • Guspaz - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Considering all the stuff they're putting in the controllers, from a camera to battery to wireless to rumble to NFC and so on, there's no way they're $2-3 a pop.
  • CaedenV - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

keep in mind all of the rumble packs, battery, bluetooth, depth sensor, various motion sensors etc. Those controllers probably cost more than the 'console' itself.
  • tipoo - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The SoC cost seems overestimated too. Even Apples largest A series chips were like 20 dollars on the BoM, most ARM chips can be around as cheap as 12-18.
  • Ariknowsbest - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

BoM is probably between 50$ and 80$ depending on what you include.

I wait till it drops to Vita/DS price level, its not worth the money and definitely not in Europe.
  • Dug - Thursday, January 19, 2017 - link

So they should be a non profit organization?
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

$60 a game you have got to be kidding me! A $300 tablet with a walled-garden approach and no media capabilities noted. Such a steal. /s

I grew up with Nintendo, but I wish they had grown up with me.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The game prices do seem a bit high. $50 or even $40 might have been more reasonable, but without a good chance for a return on their investments, publishers might not be attracted to the system. Without a healthy library of titles, a console is headed for disaster as we learned from the Dreamcast's release.

I think the point you're making about it being basically a $300 dollar tablet with limited flexibility is going to be a more substantial problem to overcome for Nintendo. I'm not sure exclusives like a Pokemon and Mario Kart can fully overcome what appears to be a fundamental problem
  • Raniz - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Just look at the Wii U. It's not a success story, but Mario Kart, Mario Maker, and Super Smash Bros sold quite a few systems I think.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

That's a good point. The Wii U was successful enough to keep the lights on at the Nintendo office and that's really all that matters. I'm sure the company's stakeholders would have liked it to do a lot better, but it and their portables let the company move along a few more years so with respect to commercial success, it's easy enough to say "Mission accomplished!"
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Your summary of my thinking is accurate Mr. Crayons, I just got a PS4 Pro for Christmas and was able to procure 8 recent titles for a total of $110. Granted, none of them had just been released, but the idea of paying $60 for a Mario Kart is astonishing to me. I grew up with Mario Kart, I get the nostalgia, but these should be in the $25-30 range.
  • jjs2016x4x1 - Sunday, January 15, 2017 - link

30 dollars max price lol no way they can get 60 dollar games out of this essentially mobile smartphone phablet lmao it's gonna fall way harder than Wii U as it's overpriced and woefully underpowered period......
  • barleyguy - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

What keeps the lights on at the Nintendo offices is the $11,000,000,000 profit they made on the Wii. As I seem to point out in comments, they have so much money in the bank that there's essentially no possible chance they can go out of business anytime in the next several decades.

Though they've actually been profitable in 2015 and 2016, not necessarily from Wii U, but from Amiibo, their royalty on Pokemon Go, and somewhat from 3DS. Pokemon Sun/Moon is the most successful mainline Pokemon game in the last decade.

On the topic of Switch, I do think $60 is a little high for games. 3DS and Vita games are generally $40 or less. And it's more of a dockable portable than a home console.

I'm getting a Switch. I have a confirmed preorder. But I'll rarely pay $60 for a game. If I want something early I'll get 20% off at Amazon. If I don't want something early I'll wait for the game to go down in price.
  • Jumangi - Saturday, January 14, 2017 - link

The WiiU didn't keep "the lights on". The sales of the 3DS and profits from the Wii have done that.
  • SquarePeg - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

I was really hoping for a traditional console from Nintendo this generation. An AMD Summit Ridge APU based console the size of an Intel NUC would have been a must buy for me personally. Something that could run all the latest and greatest cross platform games @ 1080p 60fps and Nintendo's first party franchises. If they wanted to have a gimmick they could have just put a small, efficient touch screen on the controller for DS-like usage scenarios.
  • jeffkibuule - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Better graphics in a Nintendo console does not sell systems. See the Wii U.

And no way you get such a device you described to have more than an hour of battery life.
  • SquarePeg - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Confusion and gimmicks doomed the Wii U. What I wanted was a "traditional console". Battery life has nothing to do with something that's plugged in to a wall 100% of the time.
  • Yojimbo - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

It's pretty obvious Nintendo is not interested in making a traditional console.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

He said traditional console, not overpriced tiny tablet. As for SquarePeg's desires, good luck. Even with 4.5 Tflops the PS4 Pro doesn't always hit 60 fps at 1080p. There are no consoles more powerful than that, so I think you are just thinking wishfully.
  • Dug - Thursday, January 19, 2017 - link

I'd argue that with about any tablet. Such as new iPad or nVidia Shield.
  • tipoo - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

In looking for the piece that was most Nintendo'ed, I think it would be this -
"- Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment System™ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment System™ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month."

Paid online, probably necessary evil at this point. But the free game is from the NES or SNES, and expires after each month?! It was bad enough this gen that the free games you collected aren't accessible if your paid membership ends, on the 7th gen you kept them and could redownload them forever. Expiring each month is crazy town.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Nothing from either of those systems will lure me (already got my fill of Super Tecmo Bowl Punch Out with the wii), but what might actually grab my attention would be Goldeneye......My wife and I nearly bought a console JUST to get and play that game. We opted not to after we saw it would be close to $180, but we were mighty tempted.
  • doggface - Saturday, January 14, 2017 - link

    Expiring each month? What?

Um.. I think what they are saying is you get a month free access, then you have to pay for the game, which u then keep access to forever...

    Seriously. That would be crazy.
  • invinciblegod - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

I really hope it will also have App support so I can use it as a mini tablet in between gaming sessions.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

That'd be nice. I don't own a new or original 3DS so my experiences stop with the DSi on Nintendo's portable side, but I liked the web browser (even though it's essentially useless nowadays) and would really have liked functions like e-book reading or some PIM functions like you'd find on a Palm Pilot. There was a notepad program in the DSi Shop that was more of a toy than a usable piece of software (no shock there) and Moonshell could crack open text files if you had an R4 cart, but it's hardly functionality I'd consider useful or even competitive with an old palmtop platform like Windows Mobile. Adding a bit more of those capabilities would certainly get my attention even with the Switch priced at $300.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

Based on the included photos, it looks like there's some sort of active cooling inside the device. That wasn't a big deal on the original Wii (never owned the Wii U) I am concerned a bit more about active cooling on something in a tablet form factor that's intended to pull double duty as a mobile platform. Maybe it's an unnecessary worry, but dust and dirt ingestion along with potential fan failures rase a few longevity alarm bells. I also am slightly concerned about temperature tolerances in hot climates. Does the Tegra X1 (assuming that rumor is true) require active cooling? Maybe it's not a big deal. After all, I've had laptops with active cooling that's worked for over ten years without problems, but it's a minor concern nonetheless.
  • fanofanand - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The cooling requirements for X1 depend on the package and clocks. In this small of a device you can almost guarantee active cooling unless they are running the shaders at a very reduced frequency.
  • BrokenCrayons - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

I'm guessing if they're going to try to push Skyrim on it, frequency reductions are probably off the table. It's not a deal breaker, but I like portables that are fanless and I sort of view the Switch already as more of a tablet than a fixed console.
  • jjs2016x4x1 - Sunday, January 15, 2017 - link

I think you're gonna eat those words. This will be another Nintendo MEGA-HIT. Like the original Wii - selling over 100 Million consoles in 5 years. Surpassing both PSFail and XBone.
  • ChefJeff789 - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

With their dismal launch lineup and lukewarm stage presence of third-parties during the announcement, I doubt this will do all that well. They need to build a large initial customer base in order to entice companies to make NEW games for the system. A new Zelda game and a throw-away mini-game collection that doesn't come with the console does not a Sony/Microsoft-killer make.
  • SquarePeg - Friday, January 13, 2017 - link

The Switch can't help but sell better than the Wii U, but I would be surprised if it sold more than the N64 at 33 million units. This is after all just the Wii U concept again with the cpu/gpu moved into tablet for increased portability. If you look at the Wii U tablet and Switch side by side they even look very similar. I want one for Nintendo's first party games, but not at $299. Maybe by Christmas they will bundle Zelda with it at that price. Hell, 2 years from now they may have to fire sale it at $199.

This will only happen IF they also kill off the DS... which seems unlikely. If they can converge the DS and console fans on a single product then this will be huge... but killing their cash cow that has kept them in business the last generation probably won't happen any time soon.

In my case, Nintendo certainly can. Resolution, past a certain point, just isn't that important to me and 720p is much more than enough to keep me happy. Its one of many factors that converge to make a console entertaining. I'm almost completely satisfied with the resolution of the original DS that had 256x192 res screens. As long as a game developer understands and executes well within the limits of the hardware, there's lots of fun to be had without getting overly hung up on something as insignificant as screen resolution.

It is all cool and all but I think and this is just my own opinion on this. I think they should have made this unit when it is plugged into the base have extra hardware that would allow it to play the games with higher details enabled better everything when it is plugged into the base. CPU Graphics chip more memory more storage space. This way they would have had the best of both worlds for mobile and as a stand alone console. If they did this then it would for sure be worth buying and most likely appeal to a lot more people out there.

As it sits you pretty much get maybe slightly better performance than a top end phone or high end tablet that has ARM tech inside it. It is pretty sad when MS latest surface Pro most likely has more horse power under the hood than this unit has and this is supposed to be a dedicated gaming device. I know Nintendo likes to do things different and this will most likely be the most wanted thing under 2017 Xmas trees by the kids. I just think they should have got their heads out of their butts and made a product that would appeal to the masses instead of just die hard Nintendo fans.

Again this is just my opinion on this and yes I know what I stated about this having added hardware in the base would raise the price slightly but as it sits you most likely can get a xbone or PS4 slim for the same price and still have more horse power and a lot more games that you can buy. NO they don't have Super Mario or Mario Kart but hey you can get a WII or WII-U emu that will play both of those games on your PC.

Cor, that pricing, for both the console and the games, is a bit steep! Especially if it really is a Tegra X1 inside; that chip is two years old come Q2.

I guess they figure people with deep enough pockets will pay and they'll get better returns even if volumes are down.

I don't know why we should believe Eurogamer on specs after they told about 300 MHz GPUs, docked 1 GHz CPUs, and licking of the clocks. Since the battery life is 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours of gameplay, clock locking doesn't seem to fit, not that it all ever made any sense.

But judging by the graphics quality I'd guess there are only 256 CUDA cores in the SoC, although it should be said that a lot of these games seem to be heavily ported from the Wii U so that could affect perceptions. It somehow seems a bit wasteful to me if it's the X1 (20nm) rather than an SoC on 16nm, using Pascal. The power savings from the latter should be significant, something that seems key for a mobile device, and they could squeeze out some extra performance at the same time.

I can't imagine how Nintendo would be able to get away with licking of the clocks. There's just too many of them in the world and that's a great way to get an infection. You don't know where those clocks have been.

I saw that but edits are not allowed in these forums. Shirley, you can cut me some slack.

hopefully this screen won't be atrocious like the Wii U.

720p? Eh skeptical how will the image quality will look. I'd rather have 720p games scaled up to a 1080p screen just so that the GUI is nice and crisp lol. Still a pretty cool console though. Makes me excited for the new Zelda game.

Then battery life would be even worse

236.87 PPI. That's within "Retina Display" territory (more DPI than the Retina Display iMac, even.)
720p screen, 720p games, 6.2" and it's going to look just fine.

This comment is for the dude who commented below who thinks SKYRIM IS THE REMASTERED VERSION and is a launch title lmao lol lol lol
